During the 1930's, and under the leadership of founder
William Lyons, Jaguar created its first sports car
- the "SS".
The SS90 of 1935 was the first off the line, and used
a 2.6-liter engine which capable of 90 mph. It was soon
replaced however by the 125 hp 3.5-liter SS100, a true
100 mph sports car.
Lyons was a talented stylist, and penned the car himself,
and the vehicle is now generally considered to be one
of the best-looking pre-war sports cars.
While not pioneering any technical innovation that characterised
the post-war Jaguar models, no one could deny its fine
performance, handling, styling, build quality and competitive
price. |
